Australian trio, The DMA’S, are releasing their new album ‘Live at Brixton’ almost one year after the iconic show took place.
The sold-out event was one of the bands biggest gigs to date and with over 5000 voices singing along on the album it is easy to see why.
Having formed in 2012, Johnny Took, Tommy O’Dell and Matt Mason have toured the world, playing stages with the likes of The Courteeners, Liam Gallagher and Kasabian alongside having their 2020 album, The Glow, reach number four in the UK album charts.
With their ever-growing fanbase, the O2 Brixton Academy in London became a standout moment for the band. Having originally performed there as a support act, they returned later as headliners to a completely sold-out audience.
Guitarist Johnny said: “There was a sense of irony to it because our first ever show was in London supporting The Courteeners.
“Five years later, going back and being able to do our own show there has been pretty special”
With the thousands of voices singing along with the band, it is a blast from the pre-covid past.
He added: “We got the first mix back and we asked them to turn the crowd noise up. I like hearing the crowd in live recordings and if you don’t want to…just listen to the actual recording.”
The band hope that the release will get fans excited for the upcoming return of live music as for many fans, the Brixton gig became the last major show before the national lockdown went into place.
Johnny continued: “There was a naivety in the air because no one knew it was going to be their last show for a very long time. Now I see people posting on Twitter saying little did they know that would be their last major show.
“I guess that this [album] is, it is just getting everyone excited again for when everything clears up and we can get a little bit back to normal.”
DMA’S also plan to make a long-awaited return to touring the UK starting in April 2021 followed by a series of major outdoor summer shows. However, with many venues including Manchester having sold out, there is very limited availability.
